WHY IT MATTERS

Peak operating point and continuous performance are two key aspects of an electric motor design: the former allows to know how long a specific operating point is thermally sustainable, for example in case of peak torque request, the latter points to the operating conditions that are continuously sustainable by the electric motor.

Thus, it is very important that the behaviour of the Electric Motor driving the application is simulated as much accurately as possible, in order not to exceed the maximum sustainable temperatures of all the materials involved.

In this regard, the thermal behaviour of the electric motor highly depends on its power losses variation, which in turn depend on the electric motor temperatures evolving during the defined cycle: a close link between electromagnetic and thermal behaviours is therefore mandatory - thus multiphisics simulation approach is required.

WHAT WE CAN DO

We can accurately simulate the behaviour of the electric motor during any operating point by adjusting its power losses distribution based on the evolving temperatures of the electric motor itself:

  • copper temperatures
  • magnets temperature

Moreover, dependencies on battery voltage, inverter current and inverter switching frequencies are also taken into account.

The “co-simulation” is entirely run on a Matlab-Simulink environment, leading to results that are accurate, quick to achieve and easy to integrate with other toolchain sections.
